Location: Tortola | Tortola Marine Management Base

Vessel Type: Sail Catamaran
Vessel Information:

Hulls –

  • Minor to moderate contact damages that extend from the bows to the sterns. The hulls show isolated areas with heavy laminate damages. It is noted that the core material does not appear to have been affected in these locations.
  • The port hull skeg has been broken away completely.  hull panels around the port skeg have suffered from significant compression damage.
  • The IGU (Internal Grid Unit) transverse structural floors in the port hull over the keel/skeg were noted with extensive laminate failures and crushing damages
  • Cracking was also noted to the starboard IGU/liner tray by way of the starboard aft cabin inboard.
  • Both rudders have heavy damages to the fiberglass blades and bent stainless steel shafts
  • The port transom hull and deck structures were noted with heavy laminate damages that extend forward to the lower transom step.

Deck/Topsides-

  • The topsides were noted with a very small number of minor chips and abrasions from minor impacts.
  • The deck structure shows multiple minor laminate failures in way of deck hardware attachments (pulpits, stanchion bases, hard tops frames etc.).
  • The decks were noted with a number of minor chips and abrasions from minor impacts.
  • There are extensive damages to deck hardware and windows, Port and starboard stanchions, swim-ladder, port pushpit, starboard pulpit, starboard cleats, davits, bimini frame, The port and starboard main salon windows are scuffed/scratched,

Rig and Gear –

  • The vessel has been dismasted and the mast and boom sections are damaged beyond repair
  • The ‘A’ frame atop the crossmember has sheared off and the seagull striker is broken.
  • Additional damages were observed to the anchor roller, trampoline, windlass, and longitudinal fiberglass anchor chain guide/support

Discussion –

The majority of damages to this vessel are considered to be easily repaired, this includes the transoms and the port hull interior paneling and IGU structures over the skeg/keel. However, as noted in the damage recommendations outlined in this report, the port hull skeg will need to be remade and it is expected that a custom part will need to be built from scratch.
